Moxibustion is the technique of burning moxa wool above the surface of the skin at specific acupuncture points. Moxa wool is a combination of several proprietary herbs mixed with Artemisia Vulgaris, a species of chrysanthemum.
The burning moxa produces varying degrees of heat depending on the application and is used to warm the uterus; warm the spleen and stomach to remove stagnation; regulate menstruation; stop bleeding; or calm a fetus. It may be used as part of your treatment program, depending on your symptoms or health conditions.
How Moxibustion Works
The acrid odor of moxa travels throughout the meridians to regulate Qi (energy) and blood, expelling cold from the meridians. Cold and/or heat affects the flow of Qi in the body. Cold slows down or stagnates Qi, while heat quickens Qi. When Qi or blood stagnates, the result is pain. Removing stagnation will relieve the pain. Moxibustion reduces pain by warming the meridians, breaking up stagnation and promoting Qi and blood flow. Moxa is used to maintain health, prevent disease, relieve pain and invigorate the blood.
